I know I probably bitched about the hole Bold Strokes Books debacle in this blog somewhere, but the quick breakdown goes like this:
Me & friend writes a book, it’s our first time writing something not fanfiction. It is picked up by BSB right away, because they were looking for YA erotica. We get a tiny check each, and an editor from BSB. He underlined everything red and just wrote ‘does this make sense to you?’ – And then we are hit with the frontpage of the book, told we have the choice between two fonts for the title, that’s it. Then we are told the ending needs to be changed because it needs to be ‘happy forever more’ or a ‘happy right now’ endings. Ours were neither – If I remember correctly we did try and change the end, but the editor took it upon himself to change entire chunks, as in rewrite it.
And then we were enrolled in their group email, and told to make a facebook account for PR.
That was it.. seriously.
We hated the frontpage, and to this day we still make fun of the clipart birdman. They used the wrong blurb on the back of the book, and it sold below 10 copies on Amazon, ever.
I can’t speak for my friend, but I was so ashamed of it that I was incredibly happy that I wrote it under the name Idun Mars (middle names of my oldest and youngest), and could disassociate myself completely from this absolute disaster.
The problem was that BSB owned our characters, not just the story, and in the end we went through tons of hoops to buy back our rights – which was much more than the book ever sold for, or what we had been paid out up front. But it’s ours, and we talked about turning it back to what it was before the editor – But honestly I don’t think we will ever get it done. Kryos belongs in the past, that simple.
So that is why I decided to give it away, should you be curious. This is the version I was sent from BSB, which means it’s not the story my friend and I originally wrote, and I simply have to tell you the ending was VERY different, bleak and depressing, and so much was edited through out it, that I personally can’t even recognize it as the story I know we wrote.
I only have it as a Mobi file, so there’s that. The kindle app is free, and that will open Mobi files for you. Otherwise you’d have to download something to change the file to a PDF or something.
You should know it is Lgbtq erotica, and not worksafe.
