I did an E.L James, that is true – And with that I of course mean that I took a piece of old fanfiction and turned into something non-fanficion.
The reason why, was that I was revamping my fanfiction archive, that you can find here should you be so inclined. And in doing so stumbled across the original of this. I have pretty complicated feelings about it, because it was both the last fanfiction I wrote (2017) and it was a crushing flop to say the least.
And honestly it doesn’t have any of the sprinkles that make up a fanfic, like romance of any kind, a character arc – or a satisfying end. none of that. So I get it, but I was making a statement – mostly poking fun at RPG games and FPS games, where you blindly follow an ‘unknown’ voice, and/or do extreme acts on the flimsiest of grounds. And of course you have a super vague background story that is hinted as being interesting but the player never finds out. And lastly you often set out on this mission to save the world on the basis on something like a message from way back.
It was originally a mass effect andromeda fanfic, and I hate that game with the fury of nine hells, it’s a shitstain on the franchise. But what I did like, and used for my story was the fact that you chose 1 twin, and the other is just sorta surplus and not present, but still alive and there in the game. And also you have this ai named Sam that will tell you stuff and show you where to go as you look for your dad.
Yeah, and when you read this story, you can see it shine through. I did not remove these things, I just renamed them, because I set it in a universe of my own, which is closer to something Fallout than Mass Effect.
I have thought about writing a sequel many times, but perhaps now that it’s detatched from the confines of fanfiction, I can. Time will tell.
But truth is also that I love that story, I think it’s pretty well crafted within the frame I had – it is just not a good fanfic, which is why I edited it into it’s own entity. The original is up on my archive, should you be a curious sorts.
I have to warn for extreme language, because there are loads of very graphic descriptions of sex and death, comming from the main character’s ‘other me’ in his head.
Read it here (the tab called ‘short stories’)
